Important: These guides are general care overviews. Always consult a licensed veterinarian or exotic animal specialist for medical advice specific to your pet. Steps marked with a warning icon are especially critical — please take them seriously.
Feed age-appropriate, high-quality dog food twice daily. Puppies need 3–4 meals. Always provide fresh water. Avoid grapes, chocolate, onions, and xylitol — these are toxic to dogs. Measure portions to prevent obesity, which is the #1 health issue in pet dogs.
Most dogs need 30–120 minutes of exercise daily depending on breed. High-energy breeds (Huskies, Border Collies) need vigorous activity. Senior dogs still need gentle daily walks. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys is just as important as physical exercise.
Schedule annual wellness exams. Keep vaccinations current (rabies, distemper, parvovirus). Use monthly heartworm, flea, and tick prevention year-round. Spay or neuter unless breeding. Dental cleanings every 1–2 years prevent serious health issues.
Brush coat 2–3 times weekly (daily for long-haired breeds). Bathe monthly or as needed. Trim nails every 3–4 weeks — overgrown nails cause pain and posture problems. Clean ears weekly and brush teeth 2–3 times per week.
Start basic obedience training early using positive reinforcement only. Socialize puppies with people, dogs, and environments between 3–14 weeks. Never use punishment-based training — it damages trust and causes behavioral issues. Consistency is everything.
Dog-proof your home by securing toxic plants, chemicals, and small objects. Provide a comfortable bed in a quiet area. Never leave dogs in hot cars. Use ID tags and microchip your dog — it's the single best way to ensure reunion if lost.
